Dubrovnik to Mostar transfer: the route inland
A Dubrovnik to Mostar transfer leaves the coast behind for the valley of the Neretva. The most common route runs north-west along the coast, then up the river past the delta’s citrus orchards and Metković to the border, and on through the Herzegovinian karst to Mostar. On the way the road passes Počitelj, a small Ottoman-era fortified village on a hillside above the river, which makes an easy stop if you ask in advance.
Crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina
Croatia is in the Schengen Area and Bosnia and Herzegovina is not, so documents are checked on both sides. You normally stay in the car and hand passports or ID cards to the driver or the officer, so keep them with you rather than in the boot.
Arriving in Mostar
- The local currency is the convertible mark (KM); euros are widely accepted, but small change in marks helps at markets.
- The Old Bridge area is pedestrian and paved with polished stone that gets slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
- The Old Bridge, destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and summer afternoons are the busiest time.
- Summer temperatures inland are often well above the coast.
