Dubrovnik to Kotor transfer: the road around the bay
A Dubrovnik to Kotor transfer follows the Adriatic highway south-east past Cavtat and through the Konavle valley to the border. After Herceg Novi there are two ways on. The road around the bay runs through Risan and Perast and gives the classic views of the inner basins; the alternative is the short car ferry across the Verige strait from Kamenari to Lepetane, then on through Tivat. The driver chooses on the day according to traffic and the ferry queue.
At the border
Croatia is in the Schengen Area and Montenegro is not, so both sides check documents. Usually you stay in the car and hand your passports or ID cards to the driver or the officer. Keep them in a bag on your lap rather than in the boot.
Useful to know
- Montenegro uses the euro, so there is no need to change money.
- Kotor old town is pedestrian; the driver stops at the nearest gate, usually by the main Sea Gate.
- Cruise ships call at Kotor often in summer, so the old town is busiest in the middle of the day.
- If you are staying in Perast, the village is also largely car-free along the waterfront.
