This private Međugorje tour from Dubrovnik pairs two places that shouldn't work together and do: Mostar's Old Bridge and bazaar in the morning, and the near-silence of Apparition Hill in the afternoon, where millions come each year to climb bare rock polished smooth by decades of feet.

Tip. Wear closed shoes for Apparition Hill. The path is bare, smooth rock.

Mostar and Međugorje day trip from Dubrovnik: how the day runs

The Mostar and Međugorje day trip from Dubrovnik follows the coast north, crosses into Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum or near Metković, and then runs up the Neretva valley. Mostar takes the late morning and lunch. Međugorje is about half an hour south-west of Mostar, so the afternoon is not rushed, and you are back in Dubrovnik in the evening.

With a private car the driver can aim for a particular Mass or allow more time on the hill.

Before you go

  • Every person in the car, children included, needs their own valid ID card or passport.
  • A rosary or anything you would like blessed. Many visitors bring items from home.
  • A small bottle of water for Cross Mountain. There is no shop on the way up.

Mostar in a morning

Beyond the Old Bridge, Mostar has two smaller sights worth a few minutes: the Crooked Bridge (Kriva ćuprija) over the Radobolja stream, a small stone arch older than Stari Most, and the Ottoman-era family houses such as Bišćević and Muslibegović House, both open to visitors.

Međugorje: background and layout

Međugorje is a village in Herzegovina that became a place of pilgrimage after six local children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in June 1981. In 2019 Pope Francis authorised official parish pilgrimages, and in 2024 the Vatican gave a positive assessment of the spiritual fruits of the site, without ruling on the apparitions themselves.

Behind the Church of St James are the large outdoor altar and the bronze statue of the Risen Christ. The concrete cross on Križevac (Cross Mountain) was put up by the parish in 1933, long before 1981. The path up Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) is lined with bronze reliefs of the Mysteries of the Rosary.

Questions about Mostar & Međugorje.

All FAQs
How far is Međugorje from Dubrovnik?
Around two-and-a-half to three hours each way, paired with Mostar so both sites get proper time, neither one rushed.
Can you combine Mostar and Međugorje in one day?
Yes, Mostar's Ottoman old town in the morning, the quiet of Međugorje in the afternoon. A driver who knows Međugorje's calmer hours makes the difference.
What should I wear to visit Međugorje?
Closed, comfortable shoes for Apparition Hill, the path is bare rock, and modest dress is appreciated at the church.
Do we need a local guide?
For Mostar we recommend booking a licensed local guide. Our drivers know the route well but are not guides. The guide is not included in the price and is charged separately; tell us and we arrange one for your date.
What documents do I need?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can use a national ID card or passport; all other nationalities need a passport. Non-EU passports must be less than 10 years old and valid for at least 3 months after you return to Croatia.
Are the drivers Catholic / familiar with the pilgrimage?
Most of our drivers and guides are practising Catholics and have brought thousands of pilgrims to the site. They understand the rhythm and weight of the day.
Will there be a Mass we can attend?
St. James celebrates multiple Masses every day in many languages. We'll check the day's schedule with you in the booking and aim to arrive in time for the English-language Mass where possible.
Is Cross Mountain a difficult climb?
Yes. It is about 90 minutes up steep, rocky ground. Apparition Hill is shorter and easier. You can do either or both.
