Korčula day trip from Dubrovnik by car: land or sea?
This Korčula day trip from Dubrovnik by car uses the road and a short car ferry. Our private Korčula boat tour covers the same island entirely by sea, with swim stops along the Pelješac coast and a couple of hours ashore. By car you spend more of the day on land, with Ston, the vineyards and a winery added, and the plan depends far less on wind and waves. Many guests choose the car on a breezy day or when someone in the group does not enjoy long boat rides.
The route down Pelješac
From Dubrovnik the coast road reaches Ston in about an hour, then the main road runs the length of the Pelješac peninsula for roughly 60 km. It passes Potomje, the village behind the steep Dingač slopes, before dropping to Orebić. Orebić was a town of sea captains, and the Franciscan monastery above it looks straight across the channel to Korčula, with Sveti Ilija, the peninsula's highest peak at 961 metres, behind.
The Orebić to Domince car ferry is a regular public line. In July and August there can be a queue for cars; the driver deals with it while you wait on the quay or in the car.
Korčula town
The old town sits on a small peninsula and has a herringbone street plan: the side streets are angled so that summer breezes pass through while the cold winter winds are kept out. The main entrance is the Land Gate, reached by a wide stone staircase under the Revelin tower.
The island is known for two white wines worth asking about at lunch: Pošip from the villages of Čara and Smokvica, and Grk, grown almost only around Lumbarda.
Useful to know
- No border on this route, so your usual ID is enough.
- Ferry tickets are bought on the day at the port.
- If you only want food and wine, the shorter Ston and Pelješac wine tour stays on the peninsula.
