Dubrovnik to Hvar boat transfer: how the route runs
A Dubrovnik to Hvar boat transfer heads north-west up the southern Dalmatian islands. After the Elaphiti, the boat follows the coast of Mljet or the Pelješac shore, depending on the wind, then passes Korčula before the longer open stretch across to Hvar. The final approach runs along the island’s south side to Hvar town at its western end, with the Pakleni islands spread out in front of the harbour.
Because the route passes so many islands, it is easy to break the journey. Korčula old town makes a natural lunch stop roughly halfway, and Mljet’s north coast has quiet bays for a swim. Tell us when you ask for a quote and the skipper will plan the timing around it.
Wind, sea and timing
This is a long crossing with real open water, so the forecast matters more than on short hops. In summer the maestral, the north-westerly sea breeze, usually builds from late morning and blows against you on the way up, which makes the channels choppy by mid-afternoon. A morning departure is normally the smoother option. Jugo brings a longer south-easterly swell, and bura arrives in strong gusts, mostly outside the summer months.
The skipper checks conditions before departure and can adjust the course to stay in the lee of the islands. If the sea is not suitable for the trip, the arrangements in the FAQ above apply.
Choosing a boat and packing
- A speedboat is the quicker way across; a yacht rides a chop more comfortably and has shade and a cabin, which counts on a longer run.
- Soft bags stow more easily than large hard cases; let us know about anything bulky.
- Keep sunscreen, a hat and a light layer to hand, as several hours on deck add up.
- Anyone prone to seasickness should sit near the stern and take any remedy before boarding.
Arriving in Hvar town
Hvar town harbour is one of the busiest on the Adriatic in July and August, with yachts and ferries coming and going all day. The boat drops you on the town waterfront, a short walk from the main square and below the Fortica fortress. The centre is largely pedestrian, so if your accommodation is up one of the stepped lanes, pack with that in mind.
If Hvar is not your final stop, see the Dubrovnik to Split boat transfer, or split the trip with the private boat to Korčula. All sea routes are on the boat transfers page, and quotes are itemised and sent by email or WhatsApp.
