Dubrovnik to Elaphiti Islands boat transfer: where each island lands
A Dubrovnik to Elaphiti Islands boat transfer serves three quite different islands, and knowing where you land on each saves time with bags. All three lie north-west of the city, across the Koločep channel, so whichever boarding point you use the boat heads out past Daksa or along the Lapad shore before crossing open water.
Koločep
The smallest and closest of the three has two villages, Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo, linked by a path through pine and olive woods. There are no cars on the island, so tell us which village you are staying in and we will use the right quay.
Lopud
Lopud village faces the mainland on a sheltered bay, with the Franciscan monastery at one end of the waterfront. The sandy beach at Šunj is on the other side of the island, about half an hour on foot. Lopud is also car-free, so check with your host how luggage gets from the quay to the door.
Šipan
The largest island has two harbours, Šipanska Luka at the north-western end and Suđurađ at the south-eastern end, joined by a road through the island’s central valley. Villas are spread across both, so the landing point depends on your address. Šipan is the only one of the three with a few cars.
Sea conditions in the Koločep channel
The water between the mainland and the islands is fairly sheltered, which is why this private speedboat run goes ahead on most days. Bura can blow in strong gusts down the channel, and a few days of jugo push swell onto the south-facing coves. In summer the maestral usually rises after midday and settles by evening, so morning crossings tend to be smoother. If the skipper decides the sea is not suitable, the arrangements in the FAQ above apply.
Practical tips for island stays
- Shops on the islands are small; many guests stock up in Dubrovnik before boarding, and there is room for shopping bags alongside luggage.
- If you are visiting rather than staying, a return crossing can be added so the same boat collects you later in the day.
- Combining islands works well, for example lunch on Šipan and a swim off Lopud before the drop-off.
- Soft bags are easier to pass from boat to quay than large hard cases.
For a day on the islands without luggage, the Elaphiti Islands private boat tour covers all three, and our Elaphiti Islands guide describes the villages and beaches in more detail. Other sea routes are on the boat transfers page; quotes are itemised and sent by email or WhatsApp.
